Joana Costa graduated in Bioengineering from the University of Porto (Portugal) specializing in Molecular Biotechnology, in 2014. In 2015, she joined the MICACT european network (micact.eu) to work on the integration of the EAP (Electroactive Polymers) technology in tissue engineering applications.
Joana is currently a PhD student of the University of Pisa, working Centro E. Piaggio, an contemporaneously an employee of IVTech, a start-up company focused on the production of systems for the refinement of the in vitro models. Her PhD work is developed in collaboration with two other institutions: the Istituto di Fisiologia Clinica of the CNR of Pisa and the Queen Mary University of London.
The overal goal of her research is the development of an advanced bioreactor composed of an EAP capable of providing mechanical stimulation and dynamic conditions for more realistic cell studies, focusing mainly on the in vitro model of the intestinal mucosa. Joana is interested in exploring new methods in the fields of Tissue and Cell Engineering, Biofabrication, and Bioreactors Design to improve and/or develop advanced in vitro systems.
